Warning: This article contains discussion of suicide which some readers may find distressing.
Angelina Jolie once hired a hitman to kill her for a heartbreaking reason, but she changed her mind after he asked her a question.
The big-screen star once told IMDb that back in 2001 she was going through a ‘rather bleak’ time in her life and decided she would hire a hitman to kill her.
She said: “This is going to sound insane but there was a time I was going to hire somebody to kill me.”
Speaking to The Face in 2003, Jolie explained further that a hitman was ‘not that hard to find in New York’, adding: “As insane as it sounds, I think a lot of people consider suicide when they’re young.”

Her decision to hire someone rather than take her own life was made because she believed it would make her death easier for her loved ones to cope with.
“I was very aware that so many people around me, like my mother, would feel as though they didn’t give enough or do enough, if I’d taken my own life.
“So my solution to that was if someone else had taken my life – like in a ‘robbery’ – then it would be murder and it wouldn’t be that anyone would feel they’d let me down.”
Jolie hired a hitman and planned things out, deciding she would ‘take out cash over a certain amount of time, so there wasn’t a big chunk in my bank account’.
However, a question from the hitman himself led to Jolie changing her mind.

She said: “He was a decent enough person and asked if I could think about it and call him again in two months. Something changed in my life and I figured I’d stick it out.”
In 2011 Jolie appeared on 60 Minutes where she spoke about having a dark past.
She said: “I went through heavier, darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky. There are other artists and people who didn’t survive certain things.
“For many reasons I shouldn’t be here. You think of those too many times where you came close to too many dangerous things, too many chances taken too far.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached a settlement after eight years in one of the longest celebrity divorces ever.
Two years on from tying the knot in 2014, Jolie, 49, filed for divorce after she alleged that Pitt, 61, was abusive towards her and their children on a private jet flight from Europe.
In 2019, they were officially divorced but their assets and child custody were still being decided.
During that time, Pitt hired a private judge who determined that there would be equal custody of their children.
However, the Maleficent star argued for the judge to be removed due to a conflict of interest and the Hollywood couple had to start proceedings again.
On Monday (30 December), her attorney James Simon revealed that the couple have finally reached an agreement.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr Pitt,” Mr Simon said in a statement.

“She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family.
“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago.
“Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
However, no court documents have been filed as of yet and a judge still needs to sign off on the agreement.
Why did Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce take 8 years to settle?
One of the reasons why it has taken so long is because shortly after Jolie’s divorce filing in 2016, Pitt was investigated by the FBI and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) over allegations of abuse.

Both organisations dropped their investigations and didn’t file any charges.
Also in a separate lawsuit, Pitt accused Jolie of violating an agreement to not sell their stakes in a company without both of their permission.
The Fight Club actor sued Jolie for selling her stake in winery Château Miraval to a third party in 2022, all while overlapping with a separate legal case in relation to the custody of the children.
In court, Judge Lia Martin dismissed three demurrers that had been filed by Jolie’s legal team.
“This is a clear victory for Brad which demonstrates the legitimacy of his claims and demonstrates yet again the other side’s talk is not backed up with substance,” a source told People at the time.
The pair are co-parents to Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, both 16.

Footage of Jolie’s visit has been shared on social media, with the star appearing to greet fans as she entered a coffee shop in the city.
News of Jolie’s presence in Ukraine comes as Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country continues.
Sharing a clip of the Maleficent star on her Instagram stories, journalist Maya Pidhorodetska wrote, as reported by the Daily Mail: “Nothing special. Just Lviv. I just went to have coffee. Just Angelina Jolie.”
“Ukraine is simply supported by the whole world,” she continued.
In the footage, which has since been shared further on Twitter, Jolie appears to sign her autograph before continuing through the coffee shop.
A tweet has also been shared showing the actor meeting refugees from Donbas.
People had mixed reactions to the star’s visit, with one user writing: “Why not just send financial assistance (I know she’s probably done so), but her visit will more than likely just be an inconvenience. Imagine all the logistics, manpower & security to keep her comfortable & safe. So unnecessary IMO.”
Another added: “So thousands are flocking from a war, yet Hollywoods Elite are popping over for a visit… right, got ya.”
But others, on the other hand, supported Jolie’s visit, with one saying: “Another great woman to join other great fighting women. Does anybody doubt our future will be run by women? I love it.”
With another saying: “It’s so nice that international guests still come to Ukraine. Symbol picture is the best example of trust… Angelina Jolie good luck.”
While it is not yet clear what Jolie will be doing in Ukraine, she has previously spoken out in support of the country, taking to social media to share her thoughts.
On 24 February, the mother of six took said via Instagram: “Like many of you, I’m praying for the people in Ukraine. My focus along with my @refugees colleagues is that everything possible is done to ensure the protection and basic human rights of those displaced, and refugees in the region.
“We have already seen reports of casualties and people starting to flee their homes to seek safety.
“It is too soon to know what will happen, but the significance of this moment – for the people of Ukraine, and for the international rule of law – cannot be overstated.”
